Dallas, GA - We are immensely grateful for the generous monetary and in-kind donations that have empowered us to extend our reach and provide essential resources to those in need. Together, we have made a profound impact, ensuring that everyone feels supported and valued. On Saturday, March 15th, the L.E.A.R.N. Foundation and the Veterans Upward Bound programs transformed the Sunshine Inn and its surrounding area into a haven of hope and care. We set up tents with clothing racks, shoes, and accessories, a food and drink serving station, and hygiene products for the families and individuals in attendance. Thanks to the unwavering support of our community, we served approximately 80 children, veterans, seniors, and individuals, making a significant difference in their lives.
Our foundation was born from the belief that everyone deserves access to the tools they need for success. Our central mission at the L.E.A.R.N. Foundation is to offer innovative and structured community outreach programs, activities and events that enhance the lives of individuals and families. We aim to network and build rural alliances and community partnerships with local agencies to positively impact the quality of life for all, including seniors, children, families, and veterans. Through kindness and support, we can strengthen our community.
Our dedicated staff came together to prepare a heartwarming menu of Vegetable and Turkey soup, Chili, and Grilled Cheese sandwiches. A hot meal can restore dignity and comfort, and families were able to take home any leftovers. Thanks to donations from Live Ministry and other community members, we provided soap, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving cream, razors, and feminine products like pads and tampons. These essentials can have a positive effect on mental health and self-esteem. Prior to the event, we received clothing donations from veterans, community members, and local organizations like the veterans group at UPS. We were able to offer a variety of clothing, shoes, and accessories for all seasons and ages. Receiving clothes and a hot meal often goes beyond fulfilling basic needs; it can provide an uplifting sense of dignity and hope.Timothy Bryant, one of the attendees, shared his heartfelt experience:
"The volunteers not only offered me a warm meal but also clean, comfortable clothes. That simple gesture lifted a weight off my shoulders. With every bite, I felt a renewed sense of strength and possibility. Knowing that someone cared enough to provide these essentials made all the difference—it was a reminder that I wasn't alone and that better days were within reach."
We collaborate with the community to foster a sense of unity and mutual support. Some challenges we face include reaching community members who need these resources. We want them to know that we are here to provide support at no cost and that our resource center is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10AM-2PM. While we cannot offer support beyond immediate assistance, we strive to share other resources that are available in the community with those we serve. Approximately 80% of the clothing items we brought to the event were distributed, about 80 individuals, including children, veterans, and seniors, were served, all the food was consumed or taken to go, and all hygiene products were taken. Our dedicated staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to set up, assist guests, and take everything down. Tammy Cole and Robin LaFlora played a pivotal role in partnering with Stacey, a manager at Sunshine Inn, and organizing volunteers and staff to make this event possible. Stacy, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for our support by stating:
"Thank you for coming and making sure our guests were taken care of. We are grateful to have you as part of our community. If you would not have come, some of the families may have not eaten this evening."
At this event, veterans conducted a ceremony to replace the worn and tattered flag with a new one donated by a local American Legion post. Representatives from each military branch participated as we paused to honor those who have served. As we look ahead to our future plans, we eagerly anticipate the continued support of the community. Our next event is the College and Career Fair on Wednesday, April 30th from 11AM-2PM at Deer Lick Park in Douglasville. Throughout the year, we are collecting donations of clothing, shoes, hygiene products, school supplies, and books. These donations will be distributed at our Back to School Resource Bash in July and Annual Holiday Giving Event, where we hope to serve 300 individuals, including veterans, children, and seniors.
It is vital for us to come together as a community in support of one another. Our work reflects the love we have for our community and our commitment to Liberty & Justice For All. This is our number one priority. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most. By donating, you're not just giving a financial contribution; you're offering hope and helping us continue our mission to serve and uplift the community.
